IBM System i5 – Green enough to eat…
A phenomenon exists in the IT world. It is known as ‘Moore’s Law’, and it states that processor performances will double and costs will halve every two years. Paradoxically, the tendency to run one application on a separate server is driving down Intel / Unix server utilisation rates to single figures, and contributing significantly to server sprawl.

A frequently asked question is “Why is AS/400 so expensive?” After answering that the AS/400 is
actually now called ‘System I’ under IBM’s ‘Systems Agenda’, formerly eServer ‘iSeries’ most
customers lose interest and go and buy an Intel server running Windows or a UNIX server.
Because they are cheaper.
So is the AS/400 / iSeries / System i really expensive?
